According to the Texas Health and Safety Code (Chapter 826) and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) rules, dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian starting at four months of age, with regular boosters required.
Texas does not recognize a positive rabies antibody titer (such as RFFIT) as a substitute for the required vaccination — there are no medical or titer-based exemptions allowed. Titer testing can still provide helpful information for other vaccines and overall health monitoring, but it cannot replace the legally mandated rabies shot in Texas. Always confirm current requirements with your veterinarian or local rabies control authority.
